Frequently Asked Questions about Community National Schools

What is a Community National School (CNS)?

Community National Schools (CNS) are child-centred, multidenominational, publicly-accountable schools which strive to provide high quality education for every child. They give equal opportunities to all children in the communities they serve. They were established in 2008 and are managed by the Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

How is a CNS different from other schools in Ireland?

Most Irish primary schools are currently denominational, i.e. pupils are provided with religious instruction and faith formation during the school day, whereas pupils in a Community National School are provided with a multi-belief and values education curriculum, Goodness Me, Goodness You (GMGY). Another difference is that Community National schools are under the patronage of the Education and Training Board (ETB). As ETB schools, Community National Schools benefit greatly from a broad range of supports and services from the local ETB. ETBs provide governance, educational, administrative, financial, Human Resources and Information Technology (IT), capital and buildings supports to schools. This has a direct impact on the children and families attending these schools, as it allows school leadership to focus on their primary task of leading teaching and learning. This ensures the highest standard of excellence in our schools. ETBs can also provide a valuable service to the parents of children attending CNSs through their adult and further education programmes.

What is the Goodness Me, Goodness You (GMGY) programme?

Goodness Me, Goodness You (GMGY) is an innovative educational programme dedicated to nurturing holistic development in children. It fosters critical thinking, promotes inclusivity, and instils a deep respect for diverse beliefs and values. GMGY empowers pupils to become responsible and compassionate individuals, who will make a positive impact on the world.

How do CNSs celebrate diversity?

CNSs celebrate diversity by embracing children from all backgrounds, beliefs and none. Pupils share the beliefs or non-beliefs of their families, teaching their peers about their traditions and beliefs. School celebrations and events are inclusive and respectful of all beliefs and none equally.

What opportunities do CNSs provide for children?

Community National Schools offer holistic learning experiences that go beyond textbooks and exams. These experiences include hands-on activities and a deep connection with the communities around them.

How can parents get involved in a CNS?

Parents can get involved through active Parents Councils, school Boards of Management and the Kerry ETB Parents Forum.  2 parents from the Kerry ETB Parents Forum are nominated to the Kerry ETB Board. Their involvement enhances the educational experience for everyone and strengthens the bond between school, home and the patron.

What sets CNSs apart from traditional schools?

The CNS school prioritise the unique qualities, strengths and passions of each pupil, they provide a safe physical and social environment that reinforces a sense of belonging to the school community and wider society. They will have the highest calibre of teacher who will challenge them at their level and guide their learning in a manner appropriate to their individual needs. Children in CNSs experience the curriculum in the most innovative, stimulating ways to enhance their love of learning.
