First Kerry Community National School opens its doors at Two Mile, Killarney

Kerry ETB was delighted to open the doors of the Two Mile Community National School on Wednesday 30th August which will be the first primary school of its kind in Kerry. Similar schools have been set up in Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Cork over the last 10 years. As well as serving the families of Two Mile, the new school has attracted children from the wider Killarney area who are looking for a progressive model of education, rooted in the best of tradition. As well as its unique multidenominational ethos, having Kerry ETB as its patron is significant in what this school has to offer. Kerry ETB is a locally based state agency and is already the patron of 8 post primary schools and two Post Leaving Certificate Colleges in Kerry. The ETB provides key administrative, IT, HR and many other supports to its schools. This ensures that the staff of the school are not tied up with administrative issues are free to focus on excellence in teaching and learning.

School staff, parents, community representatives, members of Kerry ETB Board and staff joined the new school pupils of the Two Mile for an opening ceremony at 12 p.m. Brendan Griffin T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport addressed the event. Minister Griffin stated:  "I am delighted that this day has come, after many months of hard work by the local community, Kerry ETB and the Bishop of Kerry. This fine school will serve the needs of the local and wider community and I want to pay tribute to everybody involved in this effort and it is great to have such a positive outcome. I wish the school community well in their endeavours and I sincerely hope that the Two Mile School has a long and prosperous future."

The school principal Catherine Barry and the Single Manager Retired Primary School Inspector Pádraig O’Donnabhain welcomed the gathering and pupils, parents, community and ETB representatives joined in the ceremony to express their vision and wish for the future of the school and its pupils.

Colm McEvoy Kerry ETB expressed his gratitude for all who made this new school possible;  “Kerry ETB are hugely supportive of this new school  and have worked very hard since the Department of Education and Skills approved its opening last June. I would like to thank in particular the Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne and Fr Nicholas Flynn Diocesan Administrator for making the school building available to the ETB, we also wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Department of Education and Skills for their support and confidence in Kerry ETB. The Two Mile Action Group deserve a huge thanks for initiating community meetings and the initial local consultation. Over the summer months they have promoted the school on a daily basis to make sure the people of Killarney are aware of it. I wish to thanks Catherine Barry having been appointed principal on the 6th August has worked day and night to make sure all the arrangements are made for the opening of the school and Pádraig O’Donnabhain Single Manager for preparing the school plan; policies and procedures as well as his role in organising the opening event. The Kerry ETB Corporate Support and Capital Department have worked hard to get the building renovated in the last month together with builder JF Flynn Construction LTD.  We are very fortunate also that a local Childcare Provider Sharon O’Riordan is finalising arrangements to open a preschool on site which will really complement the school programme. Finally, I wish to thank parents here today for entrusting your pupils to us. We will work hard to earn your confidence and support and we look forward with enthusiasm to working with you in the future. A special word of thanks to the Director of Schools, Ann O’Dwyer who has led out in this development for Kerry Education and Training Board.

Two Mile Community National School is the first multidenominational school in Killarney.

“A distinguishing feature of the CNS model is its multidenominational ethos. The school will cater for children of all faiths and beliefs equally. Parents of children in existing CNS schools appreciate that these schools make space for the spiritual part of a child’s identity while respecting all faiths and secular beliefs equally.  The model celebrates religious diversity in a meaningful way.  Speaking to parents in the Killarney area, it is obvious that they want the choice of this type of educational setting for their children.” Ann O’Dwyer Director of Schools Kerry ETB

The school is still accepting enrolments from Junior Infants- 6th Class. Anyone interested in enrolling their child should contact Kerry ETB directly on 066 7121488 086 4183558 or by emailing
