Kerry ETB Press Release

Great community interest at the Two Mile Community National School Killarney Information Night

Open for Enrolment in September

Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) and the local community of Two Mile were delighted with the attendance at the Information Evening held in the Two Mile Community National School on Thursday 6th July. The information evening commenced with a welcome from Colm McEvoy CEO Kerry ETB. Seamus Conboy National Schools Development Officer with Education and Training Boards Ireland gave an input on the CNS Model and showed a video of his own school in Citywest, Dublin. This was followed by an update on the progress in relation to opening the school in September by Ann O’Dwyer Director of Schools Kerry ETB. Parents from the immediate area and Killarney town attended the event and had an opportunity to ask questions and to apply for enrolment. School uniforms were on display and parents had the opportunity to indicate their preferences.

Kerry ETB is delighted that local woman Sharon O’Riordan is to open a Pre-school in the premises. This is a very welcome collaboration and Sharon who is a past student of Kerry ETB Childcare courses is very busy planning to open the Pre-school “Little Explorers” for the next school year. Local community representative Lisa Casey welcomed this development saying that “this will be a major boost to the community. When we were going door to door in the area promoting the school, parents were enquiring about the possibility of a playschool. We are delighted to see it happening.”

Colm McEvoy thanked the Diocese of Kerry for leasing the Two Mile School to Kerry ETB. “I wish to thank the Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne and Fr. Nicholas Flynn Diocesan Secretary for their engagement and support over the last few months with this development” Colm McEvoy.  Colm also praised the local community for the work they put into getting the school opened as a CNS. “The local Two Mile Community Group have been very busy distributing leaflets to the residents of the area and all the local preschools and have worked tirelessly to get the Two Mile Community National School opened for this September.”

Kerry ETB is a locally based state agency and is already the patron of 8 post primary schools and one Post Leaving Certificate College. The Two Mile Community National School will be the first primary school of its kind in Kerry. Similar schools have been set up in Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Cork over the last 10 years. In the Community National School model the ETB is the employer of all the staff as well as the corporate body with overall responsibility for governance. The school will have a Board of Management with responsibility for overall strategic planning and policy development for the school. Tim Hogan from the Two Mile Community Group stated “we are very happy to work with Kerry ETB as the new patron of the Two Mile School. They have their Head Office in Tralee and are available to support and guide the school in a similar way to the support they provide for their post primary school; Killarney Community College”.

“Another distinguishing feature of the CNS model is its multidenominational ethos. The school will cater for children of all faiths and beliefs equally. Parents of children in existing CNS schools appreciate that these schools make space for the spiritual part of a child’s identity while respecting all faiths and secular beliefs equally.” Ann O’Dwyer Director of Schools Kerry ETB.

The school is accepting enrolments from Junior Infants- 6th Class. Anyone interested in enrolling their child should contact Kerry ETB directly on 066 7121488 086 4183558 or by emailing
