Opening of the Further Education and Training Centre in Dingle

Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) is delighted with the opening of its new Further Education and Training Centre in Dingle.  The Centre will be opened by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Brendan Griffin, TD on Monday 23rd October at 4.00pm.  The Centre is located in Rice House in the centre of the town and provides the ETB with a modern facility from which to deliver its Further Education and Training (FET) services for Dingle and the West Kerry peninsula.  Kerry ETB offers a very extensive FET programme with over 10,000 Learners engaged annually.  The FET programmes are from Levels 1-6 on the National Qualifications Framework and include Literacy programmes, Community Education programmes, Back to Education Initiative programmes, Adult Education programmes, Post Leaving Certificate programmes, Traineeships and Apprenticeships.

Prior to the opening of this Centre, Kerry ETB’s Literacy programme was located in an office in the old CBS School on The Mall.  This new Centre will allow for the development and expansion of programme delivery right across the full spectrum of FET in the area.  The opening of the Centre will provide both Learners and Employers with the opportunity to access these services locally.

Commenting on the opening of the Centre, Ms. Eithne Boland, Centre Manager, stated

“I am delighted with the opening of our Centre in the Rice House building, which has been refurbished over the past few months.  Some courses are up and running in the Centre already in the areas of Basic Computers, Personal Development, ESOL and Irish for Parents and a variety of courses, accredited and non-accredited, are due to commence in November in Healthcare, Office Skills, Photography, Facebook Marketing, Stained Glass & Mosaic Art, Interior Design, Storytelling, Creative Writing and Horticulture.  We look forward to working with the local Community and Employers in developing the provision to meet local needs.”

Over the years Kerry ETB has worked with the Dingle Cookery School, Fáilte Ireland, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Kerry County Council, the Department of Social Protection and many other bodies in delivering courses in Dingle.  The opening of the Centre provides a real focal point and a very visible presence for the ETB in West Kerry.

Speaking prior to the opening, Mr. Owen O’Donnell, Director of Further Education and Training at Kerry ETB said,

“We have an extensive FET programme accessible across the county, but the absence of a permanent base for the ETB in West Kerry was a need that we have been trying to address for a number of years.  Our aim is to ensure that Learners and Employers have access to our services locally.  The opening of this Centre is a very positive development for Kerry ETB and we look forward to its progression and growth in the years ahead.”
