New President of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI)

Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB) is delighted with the appointment of Cllr Jim Finucane, Chairman of the Kerry ETB Board, as the new President of Education & Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) from September 21st, 2017.  Colm McEvoy, Chief Executive Officer of Kerry ETB said “This is an excellent appointment for Kerry ETB and for the ETBI as Cllr. Finucane brings a wealth of experience to the role having served as Chairman of Kerry ETB Board and, prior to that,  Kerry Education Services for many years.  ETBs are at a critical point in terms of their development and expansion and I have no doubt that Jim will prove to be an excellent President and advance local and national priorities for ETBs during his tenure and we wish him every success” .

The ETBI is the representative body for Ireland’s 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs).

ETBs operate 278 second level schools, 16 training centres, Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) colleges and over 500 education centres.  ETBs are trustees of 92 Community Colleges and also manage a growing number of multi-denominational primary level Community National Schools (CNS).  ETBs are involved in Youthreach programmes, Music, Youth Work, Back to Education initiatives, Vocational Training Opportunities (VTOS) schemes, workplace learning programmes, outdoor education and training, adult and community education and other educational programmes.  There are ETB-run centres, schools or colleges in every corner of Ireland.

Cllr Finucane has represented Kerry ETB on the Board of ETBI since it was established in 2013.  He has a keen interest in Education and Training, having worked full-time as a School Attendance Officer and as a Voluntary Youth Worker in Dublin’s North Inner City in the seventies.

Cllr Finucane was first elected to Tralee Urban Council in 1985 and has held his position on the Urban Council for fourteen years, with three terms as Chairman and more recently, a term as Mayor of Tralee.  He is the current elected representative for the Tralee Municipal Area on Kerry County Council.

Cllr Finucane states, “I am honoured to have been elected President at this very important juncture in the history of the ETBI.  While the current range of educational services delivered by ETBs across Ireland is already comprehensive, including primary level, second level and further education, as well as a wide range of adult and community services, ETBI will be working closely with our member ETBs to lead the expansion of their provision of apprenticeships and traineeships at further education level, and of Community National Schools (CNS) at primary level.  I hope that my long experience of involvement with education and training will be advantageous in bringing that agenda forward.”
